I composed these rules for being a MAN back in 2010…I have seen them copied, edited and shared many times over the years on social media. That is fine and I don’t give a shit; the message is getting out.
So, here are my actual rules for being a Man as I wrote them though more than a decade ago.
Right after my last son was born and I knew I wanted him to know these things in case I was no longer here…
1. Never shake a man’s hand sitting down, or if he is sitting down.
2. Don’t enter a pool by the stairs… and remember, being in a pool is a move of vulnerability and ask yourself if you really need to be in one. Watch the women and children play and be ready to protect and save.
3. The man at the BBQ Grill is the closest thing to a king.
4. In a negotiation, never make the first offer, always make the last.
5. Request the late check-out.
6. When entrusted with a secret, keep it.
7. Hold your heroes to a higher standard.
8. Return a borrowed car with a full tank of gas. And then consider why you need to borrow a car. Fix this!
9. Play with passion or don’t play at all…
10. When shaking hands, grip firmly and look them in the eye. If hey do not do the same back, you just gained valuable info about them.
11. Don’t let a wishbone grow where a backbone should be. Discipline yourself when you need and win!
12. If you need music on the beach, if you need music… you’re missing the point. God gave us women with emotional strength and calling to enjoy the music. Enjoy her enjoying music, enjoy it with her. Never need it though and stay focused.
13. Carry two handkerchiefs. The one in your back pocket is for you. The one in your breast pocket is for her.
14. You marry the girl, you marry her family. Make sure she is of that same quality.
15. Be like a duck. Remain calm on the surface and paddle like crazy underneath. Or live like the lion and walk at your own pace and be on top of your shit! If it’s in your kingdom, manage it!
16. Experience the serenity of traveling alone.
17. Never make the 1st move towards a woman… that is for boys wanting to be men and start their own families. Let her make you aware that she is interested in you first. Women are empowered and can let you know that she is in to you and wants to be with you. Because they know that you know, they have many dicks after them and they have an abundant mindset. So never become a follower to fan. She will make a move, or she won’t… there are more of them than there is of us; the numbers are on our side as males. There will be other females, always. But also never be afraid to ask out the best looking girl in the room. If she says “No” the next will appear shortly thereafter.
18. Never turn down a breath mint. Never give one… keep your advantage.
19. A sport coat is worth 1000 words.
20. Try writing your own eulogy. Never stop revising… but don’t live there.
21. Thank a veteran. Then make it up to him.
22. Eat lunch with the new kid.
23. After writing an angry email, read it carefully. Then delete it. Because you’d be a lil bitch for flexing over an email. Stand in front of your source of contention and resolve shit.
24. Ask your mom to play. She won’t let you win.
25. Manners and commanding respect make the the man.
26. Give credit when due. Take the blame when it’s YOU.
27. Stand up to Bullies. Protect those bullied.
28. Write down your dreams, continuously until you can put lines through them.
29. Take time to snuggle your pets if you have them, they love you so much and are always happy to see you. If not, snuggle your bitch even more. She loves the MAN you are.
30. Be confident and humble at the same time, every time.
31. If ever in doubt, remember whose son you are and REFUSE to just be ordinary. Be a BOOKER! Or, whoever your family blood namesake is.
32. In all things lead by example not explanation and consider the concerns of those you lead..
33. Dress how you want to be addressed
34. BE BLESSED BY BEING A BLESSING
35. Be a spiritual and Christian leader for your family and in your home. Or whatever belief system you adhere to, just be a leader for your family through love, temperance and virtue.
You will either be, live and lead as a Man, or remain a boy. But don’t involve in decision making, with women (stick to lil girls), having kids, or leading others.
You will fail, fuck shit up and only waste time and resources! Not your own you’ll waste though… as a lil boy, you obviously won’t have any to waste.
